Uploading data to the FTP site using Secure FTP

Required Software

In order to upload data using Secure FTP, you must use a client capable of connecting using the SFTP protocol. Here are some recommendations:

  • Secure File Transfer Client (Windows), preinstalled on most IU machines
  • WinSCP (Windows), recommended.
  • Konqueror / KDE (Linux), using fish:// URL's
  • Nautilus / Gnome (Linux), using sftp:// URL's
  • Cyberduck (Mac OS X)
  • RBrowser (Mac OS X), preinstalled on the STC machines (but is pretty bad)

On most IU Windows machines, you can launch the Secure File Transfer Client by going to the Start Menu, selecting Programs, then Communications, then Secure File Transfer Client

Connecting to the Server

Use your favorite sftp client, and connect with these details:

 Host name: ftp.chem.indiana.edu
User name: Your IU network username
 Password: Your IU network password
  • To connect using Secure File Transfer Client, click on the button labelled Quick Connect.
  • To connect using Konqueror, use this URL: fish://ftp.chem.indiana.edu/
  • To connect using Nautilus, use this URL: sftp://ftp.chem.indiana.edu/

You will immediately be logged in to the group directory that your username is associated to. You can now drag and drop files to it.

What if it doesn't let me login?

You may need to have your user granted rights to log in to the FTP server. Please contact Thomas Stromberg <tstrombe%indiana.edu>
