Connecting to the network via Wi-fi and PPTP

In order to reach the network through a wireless connection, you need to use either PPTP or IPsec. This will describe how to use PPTP Client, a GUI that makes setup and control of the PPTP connection easier.

Download and install the software

A guide that covers most of the steps needed to get the connection working for Suse 9.2 is at http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-suse-92.phtml

Be sure to follow the steps for configuring the firewall if it is enabled.

Configure PPTP Client

Start pptpconfig, and use the following settings on the Server tab:

  • Name: Some name for the connection
  • Server: vpn.indiana.edu (in case the connection will not start, use 156.56.245.2)
  • Domain: ADS
  • Username: Your username
  • Password: Your password

Click the Routing tab and make sure that "All to tunnel" is selected.

Click the Encryption tab and choose "Require Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE)" and "Refuse to Authenticate with EAP."

If you wish to see debugging information when the connection starts up, click the Miscellaneous tab and choose "Enable connection debugging facilities."

  • Click the Add Button to save your setup

Fix for MRU problem

  • If the connection will not start, you will need to comment out the mru line in /etc/ppp.options.pptp:
#mru 1000

Connecting

  • To connect, click on the tunnel name and click the Start button. It should take less than 20 seconds to connect.
