How to check your e-mail from Linux

First, you may want to look at our Recommended Linux applications for various purposes to find a decent mail application. All mail services at IU require SSL encryption to be enabled. We will write more application specific instructions later.

Standard Campus Mail

First, you need to determine which mail server you have been assigned. See the KB article titled How to determine which mail server you are using. For your inbound mailserver, make sure that IMAP is selected, and:

  • If your account is on Iago, enter imap1.indiana.edu .
  • If your account is on Kate, enter imap2.indiana.edu .
  • If your account is on Lear, enter imap3.indiana.edu .
  • If your account is on Ariel, enter imap4.indiana.edu .
  • If your account is on Pearl, enter imap0.iupui.edu .
  • If your account is on Jade, enter imap1.iupui.edu .

You will need to enable SSL in order to check your mail. Your outgoing mail server is mail-relay.indiana.edu, which also requires SSL.

Exchange

For IMAP server, enter imap.exchange.iu.edu, and make sure that SSL is enabled. Your outgoing mail server is mail-relay.indiana.edu, which also requires SSL.
