Accessing Windows Networks from SUSE 9.1

The smb:// Bug

It seems that the combination of Konqueror and the Linux 2.6 kernel have problems accessing Windows hosts if a WORKGROUP (In our case, ADS) has to be given. If you try to access smb://username@host/ in Konqueror, the following error will pop up:

The process for the smb://host protocol died unexpectedly

What is really happening underneath is that the smb kioslave is crashing. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

The Workaround: Smb4K

Smb4K is a Windows filesystem browser for KDE. It allows you to actually do more things than Konqueror, such as establishing a mount that other applications can get to.

Unfortunatly, there are not binaries for Smb4K 0.4.0 available as of yet. When there are, we will update these instructions to be a bit easier

Installing Smb4K
