Configuring your SUSE installation source to our site

There will come a time when you would like to install software, but do not have the nice SUSE DVD or CD set lying around. By configuring your installation source to point to our FTP site, you will have instant access to all of the packages available on the original media.

Starting YaST

YaST stands for "Yet Another System Tool". It is your central control panel for all system-wide configuration changes. Go to your kicker, select System, then YaST. You should be prompted for the root password to your machine.

Once in YaST, select the software screen.

Adding a network installation source

Under the software tab in YaST, click on the "Change Source of Installation Button". You will bring up another Window, similar to the following:

Click on the "Add" button, and select FTP. You will get a popup window similar to:

  • Protocol should be HTTP
  • Server Name should be ftp.chem.indiana.edu
  • Directory on Server should be /software/SUSE/9.2/DVD
  • Authentication should be left as anonymous

Click OK when done. You will get back to the Software Source Media summary screen.

Setting Installation Source priority

In the Software Source Media summary screen, select the entry with the ftp://ftp.chem.indiana.edu/ URL, and click the Up button until it is the first one in the list.

This will set it to check the FTP site first, and then try and use local media instead.
